Narrative and Design

Overview

A boy has been in his room for weeks, not wanting to go out, even as knocks on the door get louder. Hiding under his blanket, a mysterious creature of light emerges. The narrative of my light is about overcoming trauma and moving on to the future.

Environment

My Light takes place in the confines of a single room. A blue hue covers the whole room and gives off a feeling of security but also loneliness and brings the player into the shoes of the protagonist's dark world. The door is placed at the center of the room, bright warm orange light seeps through the gaps of the door and is a constant reminder of the world outside, which the protagonist fears and have to overcome.

The room is also littered with trash and laundry suggesting through the environment that the boy has not left the room for quite a while.

Creature introduction

A mysterious creature of light appears to the boy during his depressive state. The creature represents hope and optimism in the future and the bright yellow glow of the creature stands as a stark contrast to the dark blue backdrops and immediately draws the player's attention to it.

The creature seems to feed on the memories of the protagonist and allows the protagonist to move on from the memories of the object.

A key plot point is revealed as the protagonist recounts the happy moments spent with his father, which causes the player to confront his past, during this important moment, the creature is there by his side and comforting him along the way.

After recalling various memories, the protagonist encounters a particularly traumatic memory associated with a paintbrush, and the creature, with all its might, absorbed the remnants of the memory and disappears, leaving the protagonist alone again.

Ending

The story concludes with the player leaving the security of his room and stepping out of their comfort zone, represented by the door.

Behaviours

In order to make the narrative work, the player has to have an emotional connection with the creature, as such the player should interact with the creature to form an emotional connection.

Being a point and click adventure game, the cursor is an important extension of the player, and in this case serves as a representation of the player's hands, as described by a hand icon. As such behaviours of the creature is influenced by the actions of the cursor.

Avoidance behaviour

Upon initial contact with the creature, the creature exhibits avoidance behaviour and retreats whenever the cursor nears the creature.

This endears the player to the creature as the creature exhibits behaviour similar to a scared defenceless animal that requires caring.

Roaming Behaviour

When the player is not interacting with the creature, the creature roams around the room from point to point. This stimulates individuality and allows the player to emphasise and bond with the creature more.

Greeting behaviour

When the player gets familiar with the creature, the creature exhibits a greeting behaviour whenever the player wants to interact with the creature.

This simulates an excitement and joy when interacting with the player and shows the growth in the relationship between the player and the creature.

Eye Tracking

The eyes of the creature track the cursor of the player when moving around. This simulates a sense of awareness from the creature and allows the player to be more willing to bond with and relate with the creature.

Retaliation Behaviour

Upon initial contact, whenever the player tries to click on it the creature exhibits a defensive retaliation behaviour.

As previously mentioned it not only endears the player, it also makes the interactions after when the creature is more comfortable and open to the player more unique and special.

Cursor Petting

When hovering around the creature, the creature displays a behaviour akin to being petted or tickled, this simulates a playful interaction between the player and the creature and allows for a chance to build an emotional connection to the creature.
